One of the many reasons why I call Harris County, GA home is because of its excellent and diverse food scene. The South is known for its food, after all. And though it doesn’t necessarily persuade a client to purchase a home, I do highlight the culture and quality of life that restaurants provide to the area.

Restaurants are an essential part of a town’s personality and brings neighborhoods together. I’ve talked about my favorite steakhouses in the area. Today, I want to talk about another aspect of Harris County, GA food scene: breweries.

Breweries are a force on the food scene as part of a larger trend of creating a dining experience and atmosphere that’s unique and local to each restaurant and town. While people have been brewing beer for thousands of years, this recent movement is more inspired by a do it yourself craft and mentality that is a response to chain restaurants.

And Harris County, GA is close to two exceptional brew pubs I’d like to highlight:

The Cannon Brew Pub in Columbus, GA bills itself as the first brewpub since the pre-Prohibition era (and those who know their area history, know what that era represented).

Thankfully, Harris County, GA residents can drink without getting arrested today. And The Cannon represents one of the areas top places to get local, craft beers.

Inspired by the craft beer scene in Oregon, The Cannon consists of two sections: a bar area, housing the brewery, and a pizza room for families. The brewery consists of wooden walls with remnants of Columbus, GA history hanging from them. Patrons can watch their favorite brews being made while waiting for their meals.

The pub’s beer has won several awards, from first place in the Beer Olympics three years running, to the Atlanta Craftbrew Challenge. They also do a great job of explaining the different styles of libations on their site.

Located on the Chattahoochee River, the Chattahoochee Brewing Company is another brew pub that features a knowledgeable staff and excellent craft beers. And with a tagline of “It ain’t gonna drink itself”, this pub takes its beer seriously.

Their signature beer is the Little Yuchi, a pale ale made up of the finest American hops. You can see the quality of equipment they use in their back room.

Along with the beer, the intimacy and mom and pop feel is where the Chattahoochee Brewing Company shines. One Yelp reviewer calls it the “greatest and most relaxing atmosphere of any bar in Columbus”.

Another great detail of the brewing company is their digital beer menu. You can see everything they have on tap from the comfort of your own home!
